As Percy grew older, his mother would tell him that his father had been “lost at sea” not dead. Percy described his father's warm smile and a hand on his head as a "golden glow".
However, Poseidon occasionally visited Percy when he was in his cradle. When he was just a baby, Percy was attacked by a snake but managed to strangle it to death, just like the famous Roman demigod Hercules. When Percy was a baby, his father left, as it was usual for the gods, and to protect him and his mother from Zeus, who could get angry if he discovers that his brother broke the oath, as children of the Big Three are too powerful for the gods' comfort. He was named after the famous Greek hero Perseus by his mother for good luck because his namesake was one of the few heroes who had a happy ending and died a peaceful death.
